Shemayne Yarde casts an admiring eye on Rihanna’s debut fashion collection.
Bajan born international superstar Rihanna, aka RiRi, aka The Caribbean Queen aka The Barbados Babe, has invaded our shores and debuted her new fashion collection at River Island during London Fashion Week. We should be honoured, and I surely am! Playing on the trends of the seasons RiRi included monotones and stripes in her collection that emphasised the bad girl side of her persona.
Designs included midriff-baring crop tops, thigh high boots and monotone dresses; passionately the ‘Umbrella’ star says she wanted to create clothes for sassy, edgy young women who could just get up and go out looking totally fierce.
I love several pieces in the collection: the crop tops, dungaree tops, shorts and shoes. They represent the style that Rihanna’s fans have come to know and love, and can now adopt themselves. However, not everyone is feeling her designing skills; fashion writers were left unimpressed. Her creations were labelled ‘porny’ and ‘hideous’ and many magazines were considerably underwhelmed.
Either way, Rihanna didn’t let reviews phase her. She describes the experience as ‘a dream come true.’ Her collection debuted on the rails of River Island this month.
